John Cena WrestleMania 41 Rumors

Could Cena face Cody Rhodes at Mania 41? Photo credit to Trickyrebornstudios.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, reported that there's "strong plans" for a match involving Cena's pursuit of a record breaking 17th world title reign. Not only would this cement him as the GOAT in many people's eyes, it would break the legendary Ric Flair's iconic record that has stood for decades (or would it?).

At MITB 2024, 16-time World Champion, John Cena announced that 2025 will be his farewell tour and that WrestleMania 41 will be his last. If you haven't noticed, WWE has already shifted gears in their Mania promotion, featuring Cena's last Mania as the special attraction. There's no question about it, Cena is going to be in a big title match in Las Vegas April 19th or 20th, 2025. But that doesn't mean he has to win it.

Possible Match Scenarios and Predictions

As of right now, that leaves "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes, who WWE apparently has no plans to lose the title anytime soon or "The Ring General" Gunther, who is one of the top heels of the company and has been pushed as being a dominant force.

Cody Rhodes vs. Cena would certainly make for an epic face vs. face main event. If that happens I'd expect fans to side with Cena who would be the sentimental favorite like Hogan vs. Rock back at Wrestlemania X-8. Honestly, I would love Cena vs Gunther, with Gunther to winning clean to obtain nuclear heat for a title that is still in the process of being viewed as more than "second rate."

The HHH Factor

Who knows what Triple H decides to do. The Bloodline storyline still dominates the main event scene and there's still a huge possibility of The Rock being involved with Cody and Reigns. There's also Orton, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Drew McIntrye on deck for huge matches at the annual event. The main event roster is the deepest it's been in years. Perhaps if done right, it would be more interesting if John Cena goes for the one title that's alluded him and face Bron Breakker for the IC championship.

Why John Cena should lose at Mania 41

Regardless of who Cena faces, he should lose. Cena losing a potential world title match at Mania 41's main event would further solidify the passing of the perverbial torch and put over the new era that WWE preaches to us about at almost every recent PLE post-show press conference.

Cena carried the "FOTC" banner in amazing fashion. Regardless of one's opinion on where he ranks, there's no question he's earned the right to be mentioned as one of the greatest of all time (Michael Cole let's us know he's the GOAT every time he has the chance). Cena's pursuit of breaking the record will be exciting and a roller-coaster ride, but ultimately, in my opinion, he should take another L at Mania if it's for the world title.
