The New Women’s U.S. Championship: A Mixed Reception

The New Women’s U.S. Championship: A Mixed Reception

Now, I want to preface my complaints by saying thank you to WWE for creating a women’s midcard title. It’s been much needed—I’d argue even more so than a women’s tag title ever was. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. Bottom line: this was lazy. I just think the women deserve a little more than this. I believe that this brand-new women’s midcard title needed a unique name and design. Women’s wrestling has historically been put on the back burner of wrestling promotions until only recently. I remember Lita and Trish headlining an episode of Raw, with WWE making a big deal about ‘the first women’s match to headline Raw.’ It’s kinda crazy that it took that long in the first place.

Maybe they could’ve gone with a ‘Women’s TV Title’ or a ‘Women’s International Title.’ Heck, even bringing back the Hardcore Championship and making it the ‘Women’s Hardcore Championship’ would feel more significant—simply because it’s not a copy-and-paste of a pre-existing men’s title with a white strap. Like I said, I’m definitely happy the ladies are getting a new title to fight over, and I’ll even go as far as to say I like how the U.S. title looks with the white strap! I just think the female superstars of WWE have been waiting long enough for a moment like this, and I wish it had been a tad more special.
