Raw on Netflix is the biggest episode in over 25 years
January 6th 2025 will be a landmark day in WWE history. It will be the debut episode of Monday Night Raw on Netflix. In my opinion there's about four episodes of the iconic show that have an argument as being as meaningful; the debut episode, Tyson vs Austin, when Monday Night Raw finally beat Monday Nitro after losing 83 straight weeks in head to head competition and when Vince appeared on Nitro after buying WCW and ending the monday night war. Other than those four, this has to be the biggest episode of the last 25-30 years.
Why?
It can be argued that the WWE is bigger than its ever been. They've expanded to a worldwide platform to the point where holding meaningful PLE's throughout the planet are becoming the norm instead of being a special occassion. They've always aimed to be at the forefront of change in terms of how its audience digests their content, but this is their biggest move yet. The question remains, just how big is wrestling? Is it in fact hotter than the Attitude and Monday Night Wars era? The Rock n' Wrestling 80s boom? Is wrestling truly "back" in the way that it's been advertised?
Well, we're going to find out.
Netflix is one of the streaming giants where many of its shows and movies have been able to enter the cultural zenith of every day pop cultural conversation. Squid Game? Stranger Things? Orange is The New Black? Tiger King? The Crown? Bridgerton? Black Mirror? Cobra Kai? The list goes on. The platform transformed how the masses navigate and consume pop culture. The shows and movements through Netflix aren't just "niche" or "counter culture." They have been powerful enough to become part of everyday conversation and references (aka "water cooler" talk).
Raw on Netflix has the potential to launch WWE into a stratosphere of popularity that many still agree hasn't quite been matched since the days of The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Every wrestling fan knows who Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes are, but does the casual fan, who WWE is trying to reach, care? Do people who couldn't care less about pro wrestling know what raising the index finger in the air means? When someone says "acknowledge me" will someone get what it means? When a random person hear's the name Cody Rhodes will they associate him with pro wrestling? Or will they say "who is that?"
There's no doubt that Triple H will be pulling all stops to make this debut episode as big and memorable as possible.
To answer the iconic question that he's asked for most of his career, yes, we're all ready.
