Vintage WWF SummerSlam 2000 Tee
Let's travel back in time to the summer of 2000 in the WWE (formerly WWF). The company was in the middle of a record-breaking year that was loaded with a roster that was firing on all cylinders. The biggest superstar in wrestling at the time was The Rock, who was in the middle of a near 4-month title reign as WWF champion.
However, heading into the 2nd biggest PPV of the year, SummerSlam, The Rock was not the core storyline. That belonged to the biggest heel in the company, Triple H, his then on-screen wife, Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, and Kurt Angle (who was in the middle of having arguably the best rookie year ever at the time) all involved in a love triangle.
The three engaged in various memorable, hilarious (and looking back, maybe questionable) backstage segments. Some of those included when Stephanie walked in on Triple H as he was teaching Trish Stratus how to escape a wrestling hold. Another moment is when Kurt Angle outright kissed a recovering Stephanie backstage after accidentally running into her during a mixed tag match against The Rock and Lita. Weeks of humorous interactions angered "The Game" and he justifiably grew more suspicious of the Olympic gold medalist.
On a match to become the 1# contender on Smackdown, Triple H and Angle both pinned "Y2J" Chris Jericho. The triple threat main event was made official by Mick Foley, who was the WWF commissioner at the time.
The addition of Angle to the title scene was a fun dynamic to the already heated Rock vs. HHH feud, which had dominated the first half of the year. The main event was set and it headlined one of the best SummerSlam's ever. The actual match was one of the better triple threats of the 2000s, even with the botched pedigree on the announcer's table before the match officially started.
Other notable matches from the event included the first official TLC match between The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian, and The Dudley Boyz, a hardcore championship match between Steve Blackman and Shane McMahon, another encounter between The Undertaker and Kane and a two-out-of-three falls match between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit.
